Consumers face a balancing act on seafood

Seafood lovers are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea in the wake of recent findings about high levels of mercury in some fish sold in New Jersey. On the one hand health officials recommend eating seafood for myriad healthful benefits, and on the other they issue warnings about mercury contamination, which poses serious risks. “It’s very confusing,” said Donald Schaffner, a Rutgers professor and head of the university’s Food Risk Analysis Initiative. “What the mercury risk calculations don’t include is the benefits from consuming seafood, and there are plenty.
